Catalonia by motorcycle: Ebro Delta, inland canyons and La Garrotxa
Catalonia and nearby Aragón offer an unusual range of scenery in one journey: a flat river delta, dry inland hills, reservoirs below the Pyrenees and green volcanic landscapes near Olot. The following sequence helps riders arrange their own route and accommodation.
Route outline
Barcelona → Tortosa: Head south via the Tarragona area and the Ebro Delta. The delta's roads pass rice fields, lagoons and working villages. Check seasonal access and stay on permitted roads in the protected area.
Tortosa → Alcañiz: Turn inland through Els Ports and the Matarraña region. Valderrobres is a useful town stop before continuing to Alcañiz. Mountain detours depend on weather and daylight.
Alcañiz → Tremp: Travel toward the pre-Pyrenees. The reservoirs and the area around Congost de Mont-Rebei make a good landscape focus, but viewpoints and walking access need separate planning.
Tremp → Olot: Continue east via the C-14 corridor and the Ripoll area. Around Olot, La Garrotxa rewards a slower day with time off the bike.
Olot → Barcelona: If conditions suit, pass the basalt-cliff village of Castellfollit de la Roca and choose a coastal return via the Girona area. The GI-682 is popular and can be busy; allow more time than a map's distance suggests.
Verify park rules, road closures and seasonal restrictions before riding. Precise distances and accommodation are not given here on purpose: plan them with a current map and your own pace.
