Austrian Alpine roads by motorcycle: planning a high-pass loop
High Alpine roads are memorable because of the landscape and the effort of riding in it. They also require more preparation than lowland routes: access can be seasonal, weather changes quickly, and some scenic roads have tolls or special rules. This five-stage outline joins Grossglockner, Nockalmstraße and Styria as ideas for an independent Austrian ride.
A possible sequence
- Vienna to Schladming: Travel west through mountain foothills. The Kalte Kuchl and Wildalpen areas are possible route choices if they fit the day's conditions.
- Schladming to Lienz: Build this day around the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Check the operator's current opening status, toll and forecast before setting out. Leave time for stops instead of treating the road as a timed challenge.
- Lienz to Klagenfurt: The Nockalmstraße can provide a different Alpine landscape. Its access conditions also need a current check.
- Klagenfurt to Graz: A route through Carinthia and Styria may include the Soboth area. Local weather and roadworks should determine the final line.
- Graz to Vienna: Choose a return via the Semmering or a more direct option according to fatigue and conditions.
Carry warm and waterproof layers even when valleys are comfortable. Mountain riding is mentally demanding; adjust daily length if travelling with a passenger or loaded luggage. Keep a lower route available in case a pass is closed.
