Why This Route?
Connect with the elements. The Stone Guardians & Rivers tour is a scenic loop that takes you away from the cities and deep into the geological wonders of the Czech Republic.
You will ride along the banks of the mighty Elbe River, weave through sandstone towers that look like petrified giants, and explore the subterranean caves of Moravia. From the lush green north to the sun-drenched vineyards of the south, this route offers the most diverse landscapes in Central Europe.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Prague — Děčín
The Canyon Run
We head north towards the German border to reach the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe rivers at Mělník. From here, the road hugs the water, leading you into the heart of Bohemian Switzerland National Park.
This is one of the most spectacular rides in the country. The road runs directly alongside the river, flanked by massive sandstone walls rising hundreds of meters on both sides. It feels like riding through a miniature Grand Canyon.
The Finish: Děčín, a city dominated by a castle perched on a high rock cliff.
Overnight: Děčín.
Stats: ~240 km.
Day 2: Děčín — Litomyšl
The Bohemian Paradise
Today is about “Rock Cities.” We ride through the region known as Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise). The landscape is dotted with bizarre volcanic formations and sandstone labyrinths. Keep an eye out for Trosky Castle, built on two volcanic plugs—an iconic silhouette visible for miles.
We recommend a short stop to see these majestic sandstone pillars. The riding around Jičín is smooth and scenic, leading you east to the Renaissance city of Litomyšl.
Overnight: Litomyšl (UNESCO Renaissance Chateau).
Stats: ~290 km.
Day 3: Litomyšl — Mikulov
Into the Abyss & Wine Country
We head south into Moravia. The landscape changes dramatically as we enter the Moravian Karst, a limestone region full of caves and gorges. Don’t miss the Macocha Gorge, a terrifyingly deep abyss that you can view from the top.
The day ends in the warmest part of the country. Mikulov feels like a piece of Italy transplanted to Czechia. White limestone rocks, endless vineyards, and a castle on the hill. A perfect place for a glass of local white wine after the ride.
Overnight: Mikulov.
Stats: ~260 km.
Day 4: Mikulov — Třebíč
The Iron Curtain Trail
We trace the Austrian border through the Podyjí National Park. The Dyje river twists and turns, creating deep wooded valleys. The roads here are narrow, technical, and empty.
A Baroque masterpiece perched precariously on a cliff edge overlooking the river. The view from the road as you approach is breathtaking. We also pass the Dalešice hydroelectric dam (famous from Czech movies).
Overnight: Třebíč (UNESCO Jewish Quarter).
Stats: ~220 km.
Day 5: Třebíč — Prague
Water & Highlands
The return leg takes us through the serene Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. We pass the unique Green Hill (Zelená hora) church in Žďár nad Sázavou and ride around the massive Želivka water reservoir.
It’s a calm, meditative finish to an epic journey through the country’s diverse nature.
Stats: ~230 km.
